A new album by Nikos Economopoulos ΔΏΡΟ ΓΙΑ ΣΈΝΑ (A Gift for You)

Imagine that you open a box of sparkling jewels - you are blinded by their brilliance and do not know which one you like best. Exactly the same dilemma faces the listener on first encounter with Nikos Ekonomopoulos’ new album recorded under the auspices of Minos EMI, entitled "A Gift for You".

This CD is a really wonderful present, not only for the upcoming Christmas but, we might say, for the entire life of those who obtain it. The very fact that this album immediately achieved Platinum sales status speaks for itself. The "Gift" hardly had time to hit the music stores and immediately started selling like hot cakes!

The rapid sales of the young laika singer’s new record in a country where – at this time - people have been forced to economise on food costs, may appear sensational, but not for those who have been watching the creativity of this gifted young artist. For the past year Nikos’ popularity has grown along with the development of his professionalism.

His previous, well-deserved Platinum Award for his third album “An Offering of the Soul” (Katathesi Psychis, Sony, 2010), which came to Nikos in the fourth month of sales is a confirmation of that fact.

More unusual in this story is that Nikos’ fourth big CD arrived in the world very soon after the third. How did this happen this quickly and why did it turn out to be so successful?

The answer is that Nikos Economopoulos’ incredibly beautiful voice and very engaging personality were the key factors to attract cooperation of outstanding musical composers and lyricists along with talented young authors.

The names of the lyricists involved speak for themselves loud. These are the acknowledged masters of song poetry: Nikos Vaxavanelis, Eleni Giannatsoulia, Spyros Giatras, Panos Falaras and Vangelis Karatzanos. All of them have already contributed to Nikos’ previous albums.

Two young composers - Vasilis Gavrielidis and Giannis Fraseris - entered here into the company of the very big names in Greek music, such as Christos Papadopoulos, Alexandros Chrisovergis and Panagiotis Brakoulias. Maritta Rossi is a young composer, but her name is well known due her work with Nikos' previous CD.

The only duet in the album features lyrics written by the major laika singer Stamatis Gonidis and music by well-known composer Vasilis Dimas. It was Gonidis who proposed to Nikos that they sing it together.

To make our review less descriptive we will not analyse each of the CD’s songs, but just try to figure out genres for them and to make some observations on a few tracks.

So, the album “DORO GIA SENA” is compiled of 13 tracks:

1.KSIMERONEI

2.DORO GIA SENA

3.DEN EIMAI KANENOS

4.ΑΛΛΑ ΜΟU TAKSANE

5. PARE ME ΜΑΖΙ SOU

6. DEN EIMAI KALA

7.DEN ME NOIAZEI POIA ISOUN

8.SIMEIOZATE DIPLO

9.THA ΜΕ VRISKEIS BROSTA SOU

10.ΜΙΑ KARDIA STON ANEMO

11.DOS MOU TI ZOI MOU PISO

12.TRELOS KAI ANAPODOS KAIROS

13.I AGAPI EINAI TRAGOUDI

The first number belongs to Vangelis Karatzanos and Giannis Fraseris. The song became popular before the CD release, being a radio pilot single and later - screened as a promo video for the album. It combines perfectly elements of laika style in instrumental sounds with some features of reggae and samba, creating an image of a happy, carefree mood of a young man in love. The lyrics of slightly impressionistic style inspired Manolis Tzirakis, the director of the video clip, to create poetic sketches with a touch of French elegance.

The second track - the title song of the album DORO GIA SENA has created a storm of emotions in the hearts of the singer’s worshippers as well as added many new fans to their ranks. The mysterious appeal of this little masterpiece lies in many factors. Sincerity and the deepness of the words by Elenia Giannatsoulia touch a nerve with the psychologism characteristic for this author. The idea of a song, which is a singer’s gift to his fans, finds its beautiful incarnation here in a genre of a love rock ballad. The young composer Vasilis Gavrilidis created an inspirational melody with the chorus of high nervous tension which stirs the blood and emotions. Nikos’ performance of this song opens some new qualities in his magnificent voice. He found for the verses very warm, gentle colours we have never heard before, while in the choruses it sounds with real passion.

We will skip in our review two other fantastic songs by the same couple of authors: a strong zembekiko “DEN EIMAI KANENOS” and “DEN EIMAI KALA”, a laika waltz.

Another poetic inspiration from Eleni Giannatsoulia brought to life a song, which stands aside from everything Nikos has sung earlier. It is a political rock ballad composed by hugely talented musician and composer Christos Papadopoulos, who already created a couple of hits in Nikos’ previous album.

The main idea of the song TRELOS KAI ANAPODOS KAIROS (Crazy and Upside-Down Times) reflects on the dependence of a person on the unfair political rulers. It is a picture of a painful condition of the human soul, affected by the crisis, which created a disharmony in the simple life of people. The verses of the track are written in progressive rock style, while choruses of it belong to the unique Papadopoulos’ fusion of rock, laika and Pontian (Pontic). The expressiveness of Nikos’ performance n this track is beyond comment, which is due, partly, to his distinguished articulation.

The next set of tracks belongs to the tandem of the big masters, who have already invested a lot into Nikos’ second and third albums: composer Alexandros Chrisovergis and lyricist Spyros Giatras. Here we have PARE ME ΜΑΖΙ SOU (the warmest love song of the mild south European style), DEN ME NOIAZEI POIA ISOUN (a sensual laika/ Mediterranean tango), DOS MOU TI ZOI MOU PISO (laika–hard rock composition of a lyrical drama type)

The text of the ballad ΑΛΛΑ ΜΟU TAKSANE by Panos Falaras and Maritta Rossi is no less unusual for what the public would have expected from Nikos than that of TRELOS KAI ANAPODOS KAIROS. In fact it is a confession of a young man of Nikos’ age. It unfolds the story of his life, the process of personal growth, collapse and revival of the ideals and of finding himself. The music here is growing from the narrative verse to the epic drama in the chorus of zembekiko-influenced style,. Nikos’ performance in this track reflects this form perfectly well by dynamically developing from the tender vibratos at the beginning to the powerful sound in the choruses.

Two tracks by hit makers Nikos Vaxavanelis (lyrics) and Panagiotis Brakoulias (music) compete with each other in beauty. The rock ballad ΜΙΑ KARDIA STON ANEMO mesmerizes straight away with the instrumental entry and then holds the listener in captivity with the excruciatingly beautiful harmony of lyrics and music. Nikos’ voice ideally suites the style of the song adding to it a lot of psychological nuances and colours.

Dancing pop hit SIMEIOZATE DIPLO grasps us with the rhythmic inventiveness of both words and music and serves as a charming counterweight to the image of the beautiful but sad ΜΙΑ KARDIA STON ANEMO, composed by the same authors. Nikos’ singing of SIMEIOZATE DIPLO is full of energy and so infectious that already from the first time any listener involuntarily will sing a merry chorus “SE MISO – S’AGAPO: SIMEIOZATE DIPLO”!

The duet I AGAPI EINAI TRAGOUDI is a real sample of “laika belcanto” - hovering above the whirling waltz accompaniment, the voices of the singers blend harmoniously, creating an image of a splendid beauty.

The CD is perfectly decorated with several photographic portraits of Nikos, that are intended to deprive of sleep the army of young singer’s fans.

The highest standard of vocal performance, the excellent quality of the music and words – all together everything in this album which is overloaded with potential hits - is saying one thing: Nikos Economopoulos is poised, ready to make a breakthrough in Greek discography with this CD – a breakthrough predicted by lyricist Spyros Giatras at Niko’s previous Platinum Award ceremony.

Fashioned from native Greek music (laika) features that are framed into the modern genres and are sung by one of the most attractive voices of Greece, this album could be successfully distributed in other countries. And sooner or later this will happen!

Interview with Nikos Economopoulos by Manos Kornaros

Interview with Nikos Economopoulos by Manos Kornaros at the radio show “Mouzika Asteria” (Melody88) – 24 November, 2010

(Abridged and translated)

The recent interview which Manos Kornaros, the broadcaster of the radio Melody88 (based in Sitia, Creta ) organized with Nikos Economopoulos for the show Music Stars, gave us a chance to learn about some plans and some thoughts of a talented, young and - as Manos accentuated - much beloved singer.

Manos chose the topic about a new Nikos’ song Ksimeronei (“Dawning”) as the main subject for the whole interview. Written by two young authors (Vangelis Karatzanos – lyrics, Giannis Fraseris - music), this song became very popular straight away after first appearance on air.

Manos: The new song is a new page opening in your successful career. How does it happen, that every song you sing becomes loved by all the people?

Nikos: Is it my success or failure – I never understand? I only know and feel the songs themselves. I am trying to find compositions which touch me and then the same happens to the public. For me the most important thing is to know people love songs which embody parts of the souls of their creators. If this is happening I am happy!

Manos: It is rare when a new artist is having one success after another like you have.
Nikos: Thank you very much and my thanks to people who approve and love me.

Manos: What can you say about collaboration with Vangelis Karatzanos and Giannis Fraseris, the composers of Ksimeronei?
Nikos: Both of them are very good at their job. When they showed me the song I thought – I need something of that kind, different from what I sang before, something cheerful, happy. This song talks about our everyday life.

Manos: When is your new album expected to be released? What are you going to give to people this time?
Nikos: I believe that this new CD will be even better then what I had before. It is made of many types of music: zembekiko, rock ballad, dramatic (so called “songs of the broken heart”), lyrical love songs, all sorts in one CD. There will be 13 excellent tracks there – many thanks to the creators of the songs! Besides there will be a surprise duet with one dear friend and colleague of mine.

All these things you will know close to the 6th December when the CD will be released by my new musical home – record label Minos EMI. After a very successful collaboration with Sony, when my contract with them was expired I had proposals from all the record companies. My instinct led me to work with the Mions-EMI, and I am very happy with this my choice.

Manos:
This year you appeared at “Fix” together with Nino and Ioakim, adding some fire to the night life of Athens. Can you say a few words about this collaboration?

Nikos: We started onat 12th November. This is a youth show, we work every Friday and Saturday. I found from the two weeks we worked, that even though there is financial hardship in Greece, people are coming to the club. Such love from the public is indescribable!

Manos: Until when will this show will be continuing?
Nikos: Nothing is clear yet. As long as people come we will work.
_______

Other questions discussed touched various spheres of life and music.

Here are some of them:

Manos: If you could imagine that you can change your work, what it would be?
Nikos: I put a lot of effort into what I am doing, so I would not change anything.

Manos: Nikos, what party you are?
Nikos: I think there are no parties of musical kind, so I am not a party. I sympathize the national parties, but not a particular one.

Manos: Has your character changed since you started singing in the night clubs?
Nikos: I have been singing there for 10 years already and as a person I have not changed at all, nothing in me is going to be changed. So, I was, I am, and I am going to be forever myself.

Manos: With which artist you would like to work together? What are your impressions about your collaboration with Giannis Parios?
Nikos: I would like to work with any artist who loves music and not the glitter and tinsel about it. My collaboration with Giannis Parios was the best experience for me. He is a big artist and a big person.

Manos: Did you try to suit the “radio broadcasting style’ (format) with this new track?
Nikos: It was a beautiful song and I felt the urge to sing it. I did not change my style. The new CD will have songs of the kind people are used to hearing from me.

Of course, Nikos was showered with questions from his numerous fans and managed to answer some of them.
At the end of the interview Nikos addressed some warm words directly to his public, to people who love him:

“I wish everything good for you, wish you to have health, a happy life; I wish you to see things with optimism, with positive energy. We all should be changed, trying to do our life better, not only for ourselves but for the people near us. One should help another, as Jesus Christ said. I wish you health, love and above all the peace in the world!

The new album of Nikos Economopoulos titled DORO GIA SENA (A Gift for You) will be released in the first days of December.

Nikos Economopoulos in The Flow of Musical Life

Nikos Economopoulos in the flow of musical life
(A TV “confession” before the winter concert season).

In a recent MAD TV show "OK", which was an interview in conjunction with certain prankish confession, Nikos Economopoulos talked frankly with host Themis Georgantas and to all the TV audience, expressing his views on recent events in his career and musical life in general, what is happening and how he would see it progress in the future.

Themis Georgantas has the rare tact and ability to win over the guests on his program, to encourage them to be sincere and to expose to the public most clearly, who they are and what they think. In the case of Nikos Economopoulos, viewers could see yet again that this extraordinarily talented singer has a very sharp mind and a rare modesty.

Nikos again reaffirmed his commitment to the laika style of music and expressed his concern that not enough of this music is featured on radio and television.

At the same time, Nikos emphasised that he also likes many other musical styles and Themis did not fail to take advantage by immediately asking which musical artists of those “other’ styles Nikos would name as the most successful over the past decade. Nikos’ answer was not unexpected, as he named Sakis Rouvas, Michalis Hatzigiannis and Despina Vandi.

Any interview of an artist provides a good chance for the artist to promote themselves. Nikos Economopoulos is obviously not one of those who cling to the slightest opportunity to tell the world about their achievements. Despite a good chance, the artist never recollected or mentioned his recent stunning triumph in Cyprus - although it might have been tempting to talk about the raging crowd that surged onto the stage of "Monte Caputo" (Lemesos) in a sincere desire to be close to the singer and to clutch him in their passionate embrace.

When Nikos was asked whether would prefer to share a stage with Despina Vandi or to be performing in a programme by Anna Vissi and Sakis Rouvas, he chose the first option, explaining that he would not like to be the third artist on the stage. This answer was probably the only possible answer to such a question, as he would chose the option of being second rather than third. As an artist, he has the talent and experience to be able to honestly say it. Here we might also admit that the reality of musical life goes further than fantasy as we now know that Nikos will be the first in collaboration with Nino and Ioakeim Fokas.

While answering in a relaxed manner any questions regarding the music business or television, Nikos responded without a hint of irritation to sensitive issues relating to his personal live, leaving, however this area shrouded in thick fog.

During the theatrical confession Nikos replied to the question "Where do you want to be now?” quite unexpectedly: "In a strip club." In doing so he revealed his feelings during this public mental undressing of himself – his desire to swap roles, his preference to be a spectator not a participant of such a psychological experiment, albeit not very serious.

Talking about the gloomy predictions across the country which is in the midst of an economic crisis, Nikos noted that he cannot help but worry about the future, but that, at the same time, he wants to be an optimist on this issue and relies on God.

“If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” – this quote goes well with what happened to Nikos’ scheduled winter season performances with Giannis Parios in “Fever”. It took only half a month after Nikos announced details of his coming season on both TV and radio shows during Greek music week, (7th & 8th October) that the singer’s plans changed - as they say: “due to the new circumstances”. Is this change for good or bad? This question was and still is hanging in the air.

But, as ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitis said : “You can’t step twice into the same river”. The fact that Nikos Economopoulos sings this season not with the prominent Giannis Parios but with well known young pop-rock singer Nino and the promising Ioakeim Fokas is a big challenge and a good sign of the progress and development in Nikos’ career.

Being the biggest and hugely popular young star in Greek music, Nikos hardly would make the correct step by appearing for the second time with the “father-figure” of Parios, as he did last winter season. The drawn-out collaboration on the stage of a very young man and a veteran luminary of Greek song would have concealed the danger of rooting in Nikos the sense of discipleship, and, at the same time, skipping over an important period of the young singer's boldness. The new alignment of forces on the Greek stage will enable this extremely talented singer to prove himself as an idol of youth and to enrich his repertoire with the songs in the rhythms of fashion.

On his work at the moment, Nikos talked with noticeable relief: his new album is in the process of being recorded and it is expected to be ready close to Christmas. The singer lifted the veil of secrecy by revealing that many of the songs on this occasion will be of a more contemporary style than previously, and traditional laika and zembekiko tracks are combined in this CD with rock compositions and other new trends.

One of the songs, the first single of the album Ksimeronei (Kalimera) is already on air now and has gained big approval, especially among the younger audience.

So, as the seal of confession has been broken and all of us are getting to know Nikos Economopoulos’ hopes and wishes for the future - along with his thoughts about the past - the only thing we have to say now is to let him successfully enter the new winter season and to keep on being the biggest young musical sensation in the contemporary Greek music scene.

Performances of Nikos Economopoulos , Nino and Ioakeim Fokas will begin on 12th November, 2010, on the stage of the night music hall venue “Fix” every Friday and Saturday.

Έχω να μάθω - I Have to Learn (lyrics translation)

Words by Nikos Vaxavanelis
Music by Panagiotis Brakoulias
Nikos Economopoulos - album "Proti Agapi", 2007

You were one more experience in my life,
That’s why you are leaving without taking with you my soul
You were an experience and a sweet lie,
One more wound to the heart, one stop, but not the end

I have to learn, I heave to live
I have to lose and win
I'll have to give,
to love and to betray

I have to say, I have to do,
To go down and then up
I have to feel and to believe
I have to fight for my life.

And if I suffer I will say to you a word
Sharp as a razor blade, that can cut even water.

You were an experience, my wrong way journey
You became a body, which was one with mine,
You were an experience to forget
Even though your kiss could make me reach the sky.
I have to learn, I heave to live
I have to lose and win
I'll have to give,
to love and to betray

I have to say, I have to do,
To go down and then up
I have to feel and to believe
I have to fight for my life.

And if I suffer I will say to you a word:
You can't cut water with a razor's blade

Original lyrics:
